Here are my two Christy Mathewson HOF cards. I still need the ‘white cap’ variation. He’s considered to be the third best pitcher of all time (behind Cy Young and Walter Johnson) with 373 total wins. These are two of my favorite t206 cards.
Typically, writing or stamps on the back of cards lower the value of the card. However, I’m collecting t206 cards in hopes of completing the set no matter the condition of the cards. Notice the stamp on the back of the portrait Mathewson card – it dates to 1910, when the card was produced. This is such a unique stamp and the fact it dates to the same year the card was issued to me is awesome.
As for the black cap Mathewson card, it has one of if not my favorite back, Polar Bear. The Polar Bear backs have always stood out to me, perhaps because of the bold blue color. Polar Bear backs tend to be very stained since they could be found in scrap tobacco packs rather than cigarette packs.
